How much does a wedding videographer cost?
We take a look at this much researched question…’how much does a wedding videographer cost?’ With the average UK wedding now sitting at £31,974 we look at how much you should budget for a wedding videographer for your Norfolk or Suffolk wedding plus what you are getting for your money! Lets take a look and help answer all your questions on all things wedding videography prices!
Wedding Videographer prices
Here is a short answer on Wedding Videographer prices: Wedding Videographers who charge high are charging from confidence, and those who are cheap are charging from inexperience. Now read that again - and think who would you entrust on your wedding day?
We know that all wedding budgets vary from couple to couple however whatever your budget, stacking your budget to look at wedding videography earlier on, rather than seeing what’s left over at the end may be the smarter move! A wedding videographer gives you more bang for your buck and longevity. Flowers die, the cake gets eaten but a wedding film is something you use over and over again for the rest of your lives making for all the better investment.
Leveraging the difference between price and value will be your most effective investment strategy when booking a wedding videographer for your wedding. Some wedding videographers may be overpriced just as much as they are under-priced - so you need to find your ‘gold bar’ wedding supplier! Of course, wedding videographers vary from supplier to supplier but looking at some varying price points will help give you a rough idea of what you may get for your money!
Some food for thought…. with the average cost of a UK wedding now at £30k plus - setting aside just 7% for wedding videography would work out at around £2,000
1. Experience and skill sets of your Wedding Videographer
Like anything, someone with more experience will always charge more. However, there might be wedding videographers out there that have been filming weddings for many years that aren’t that great but maybe fulfilling a ‘budget market’ by creating basic wedding films. Whilst of course the average bride or groom to be won’t have any knowledge about what skill sets a competent and creative wedding videographer may have in terms of geek knowledge or gear/tech info - but it’s pretty evident by watching lots of wedding films you can see what standard of work they are providing. Wedding Videography is obviously a creative thing and you could say it is subjective so it’s a lot about finding someone’s style you like!
2. Location, location, location
Most wedding videographers who live in Norfolk, will no doubt generally film weddings in Norfolk or Suffolk as an example - so close by. If you are getting hitched in the Scottish Highlands and find a wedding videographer in Cornwall - whilst they would be up for the journey and adventure there will be added costs incurred therefore bumping up the price. So in effect, you are paying for additional mileage, time, travel costs, consumables and accommodation not necessarily getting more bang for your buck in the actual wedding videography itself. Finding a wedding videographer who lives closer by makes more sense. On the side of the coin - if you find a wedding videographer who lives further afield but you want them, absolutely love their work, they are available and on budget then of course book them!
3. Wedding Videographer’s time filming on the wedding day
Some wedding videographers may offer different packages and pricing mainly based on how long they are filming on the wedding day. More filming means more editing and more time and vice versa. Check how long they work for on the day and what you are getting for your money. Oh, and a quick tip, if you are thinking about just filming the ceremony (which of course is important) don’t….. there is more to a wedding than just the moment when you say ‘i do’ and exchange rings!
4. Wedding Videography equipment and drones
Someone charging £150 for a basic wedding film will be of similar quality to that you may get from being shot on an i phone by Uncle Bob (that’s a joke by the way). This lower price point wedding videographer is no doubt going to have more basic video cameras and poor audio equipment. Filming wedding films is of course a business and a commercial operation, someone charging so little won’t be investing or reinvesting in new equipment to give you the best outcome/wedding film. Someone charging £1800 as an example is more likely to be providing better quality gear including new cameras, gimbals, audio and even possibly a drone.
5. Insurance, authorisations and certifications
Booking a credible wedding videographer will mean this person/business will be able to not only provide great gear but be credible in terms of safety and competencies. Wedding venues will require copies of public liability Insurance, drone insurance (if a drone is being used) for aerial work and an Operational authorisation issued by the C.A.A (Civil Aviation Authority).
6. Your Wedding Date
Some wedding videographers may do you a deal if you are getting married off-season - some may not. In addition, the day of the week you marry may also have an effect on the price. Getting married on a Saturday or Sunday (the most popular wedding days) may cost more at a wedding venue so may be the same for a wedding videographer. Personally at Race Wedding Videography, if I am filming a wedding on a Monday or a Saturday, it’s the same thing. I don’t have any fewer costs on a Monday than at a weekend, plus am I filming better wedding videos at the weekend vs the mid-week of course not!
7. Number of wedding videographers and second shooters
Some wedding videographers will have a second shooter included in their package, some may offer this as an extra however many wedding videographers will use multiple cameras to film things like the ceremony without the need for an actual second person. Most experienced wedding videographers won’t need a second person on the day and can handle more than one video camera at a time.
What do you get for your money?
Wedding Videography - £0 - £1,000
Someone once said ‘you get what you pay for - wedding suppliers are no different! Choosing a budget wedding videographer may mean you are paying less but you will also not be getting as much value - so think carefully before penny-pinching on your wedding film. It has been well documented and researched that not booking a wedding videographer is the biggest wedding day regret from brides and grooms, it will also be the biggest regret if you don’t get a good one!
If you were building your dream home, you wouldn’t employ an amateur builder looking to build his or her portfolio, with a low price point, little experience and no credible portfolio of works carried out, would you? This builder may build your house with cheap materials, and bad foundations and it would topple down! (I hope you liked this metaphor for your potential train wreck/bad wedding film!)
From experience, wedding videographers seem to don’t have clear adverted price points on their marketing or websites. Of course, there is the age-old line usually displayed ‘ Ask for a quote!’ however the general consensus may be they are overpriced and don’t want to show what their prices are on their websites so people don’t click off them straightaway maybe?
Wedding Videography - £1,000-£1,500
The lower end of this price bracket will mean you may be starting to get there. Like we said there are videographers who are underpriced as much as they are overpriced. So work out if chosen wedding videographer is on the money. Wedding Videography £1500 - £3000+
In my opinion, If you spend more than £3,000 it is unlikely you will get much more value for money than a £2000-£2500 wedding film. The higher the price the less distinct the difference is - however you may find a £2000 videographer charging £3000 if you are looking at a wedding film further afield or a destination wedding for example, to cover travel and accommodation costs.
