Weddings at Home

For most of us, our homes are our sanctuary's. They are our dream spaces because we chose them, created them and moulded them into us. This is why hosting a wedding at home is a really great idea. Of course, there are lots of things to think about but we will get to that so don't worry. Home weddings mean you are in a place, your place, where you feel most comfortable and happiest. That is exactly what Charlotte & Peter did. Charlotte, originally from Norfolk came back to her family home (a pig farm - so cool!) in Hopton, Suffolk, which held a host of memories, surrounded by her family, in the village that means so much to her. So a home wedding made a lot of sense and what a day it was!

Benefits to Home Weddings

So whether you are thinking of a home wedding at your own home or your family/ relatives property there are a host of benefits. You can reduce your wedding budget costs too as you aren't paying a premium to a wedding venue. I suppose there is an element of being able to spend more on the things that you want as well as the lion's share of the wedding costs aren't on the wedding venue. But, of course, the cost isn't necessarily a driving force behind deciding to have a home wedding. A home wedding is very customisable in a space you already know you love. There will of course be a slight downside as there are some more wedding logistics to think about and you will still need some fab and professional wedding suppliers to help but that's cool.

Before celebrating tying the knot at home for the most amazing day of your life - like Charlotte & Peter, you may look at having a wedding ceremony in a local church or registry office first before heading back for your home wedding. Or, you could have the whole thing at home, but we will come onto that later (Legalities!)

Weddings at home also lend themselves to celebrating your wedding if you got married abroad or have already done the legal part of the wedding beforehand. Having a wedding celebrant lends itself perfectly well to a home wedding. There are some great ones about Norfolk & Suffolk. Having a celebrant at your home wedding means you can help shape, mould and personalise what is said, without the legal jargon or religious bits.

Having your pet at your wedding is a dream for most of us. The trouble is many wedding venues may not allow this. So having a home wedding means 100% the dogs and cats can be involved too!

Depending on where your home wedding is, you may need to think about parking, where are all the wedding party cars going to park? Where can they leave them overnight? As you can bet your bottom dollar everyone/ most people will be drinking - well it is a wedding right?! Some wedding transport or mega big red wedding bus aka a vintage Routemaster or taxi minibus may work well?

You will also need to do some research into wedding accommodation. What local accommodation is there? Research hotels, quirky glamping and B&B's availability nearby will certainly help your wedding guests who may not know the area.

Weddings at Home

Now, the neighbours. Maybe invite them (if you like them or not!) Be your normal courteous self by letting them know there is going to be a wedding, but if they are drinking and dancing with you it won't matter quite so much anyway.

However big your home is for your home wedding, you will probably be best hiring a large marquee. Depending on the time of year, think about whether you need heaters, air-con units (ok in Great Britain you may need more heaters than air-con, but you know what I mean!) Outside Charlotte & Peter home wedding marquee, they had some great fire pits, these looked great, worked as a lighting source and also were nice and warm!

Now a wedding venue will of course have a wedding coordinator or wedding planner. These people are wedding professionals and they deal with weddings quite literally on a daily basis. Now, you won't have their skill sets, so it may be worth considering help via a wedding planner. This could be help internally from the family or an actual wedding planner. The issue with someone in the family will be that they will already have other duties on the wedding day plus the task of partying hard and drinking shots so an external wedding planner may make more sense. Now, the moment you are reading this your thoughts will immediately turn to Martin Short who played the eccentric wedding planner extraordinaire ‘Franck’ in the amazing wedding film - Father of The Bride…. (did you just his name in a funny accent in your head?)

Home Weddings

Unless you are doing a micro-home wedding where you may be able to do the food yourself with a little help from Auntie Shelia and Aunt Bessie's ( cakes) you will probably want to hire in, an external caterer. There are lots of great ones in Norfolk and Suffolk, meaning you will have lots of choices. Choice of wedding caterers and choice and style of food. Do you want grazing platters for your wedding breakfast? Quirky food trucks like Fish & Chips, Ice Cream vans or some wood-fired pizza? (you had me at pizza). Do you need Table Service? If so you will definitely need a front of house team too. In England and Wales, your wedding venue needs to have a marriage license in order to tie the knot, well legally! So you may be better off getting hitched with a wedding registrar or vicar in a church or registry office first. Another thing, like Charlotte & Peter, you will need to hire in some posh/ chic porta loo's! Again, there will be lots of suppliers out there, but of course, a bit of a necessity so don't forget to book!

Wedding Videography for your Home Wedding!

Having a wedding videographer for your wedding is so popular now. However, having a wedding videographer to film your home wedding has a lot of benefits too. You will be instantly more at home and relaxed as because yep you’ve guessed it you are at home! Depending on your home location it should still be possible to get some drone wedding videography too. A great way to capture your wedding celebrations and your special place all in one. With Charlotte’s family home being a pig farm and farm, in general, was great as I also had some picturesque fields to capture too! Obviously, these looked great but it wasn’t just about the aesthetic - this was where Charlotte grew up, a place of lots of memories, childhood, so helped tell the story, Charlotte & Peter’s romantic love story of their home wedding. So in summary, home weddings are great, they work great for wedding videography, so if you are thinking about a home wedding get in touch I would love to help with wedding videography - but only on one condition…. there has to be a wood-fired pizza truck, otherwise, I am not coming…
